Art and Design Curriculum

Intent:

At the Orchard Lea Federation pupils are provided with regular opportunity to learn, develop and enhance their creative skills through Art and Design to become aspiring individual artists. Pupils will be offered a regular, varied curriculum to allow them to have a rigorous understanding of art and design: to teach them the knowledge and skills to become inventive, innovative, and inspired; The children will be challenged and encouraged to experiment, think critically and to have the confidence and curiosity to try new things. Pupils at Orchard Lea Federation will know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, contribute to the culture, creativity and the wealth of our nation. Pupils will learn about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms. Sometimes, these great artists will be used as a platform to mimic and adapt, other times the children will be offered experimental opportunities to collaborate, explore and be creative without limit. “Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity” National Curriculum. They will be encouraged to care about their work, and others, as well as respect, critically analyse and reflect on their own and others artwork and making adaptations to improve and refine their masterpieces.

Aims:

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Key stage 1 Pupils

to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Key stage 2 Pupils:

to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Implementation:

Every term, every child will complete an Art and Design unit which will build on prior knowledge and skills; this is clearly organised and shown in the progression grid which is meticulously planned and followed across the schools. At the Orchard Lea Federation Art and Design, where possible, will be linked to other areas of the curriculum to create a holistic approach that is relevant.

Each unit incorporates a series of progressional lessons which are always initiated by an artist study. The artists selected for the Orchard Lea Federation are from a variety of different centuries, including modern day e.g. Banksy, and cultures, as well as ensuring famous local, national and international talent is studied (see the Art and Design overview for this). The artist study will always happen as the first session in the series. From here, the children then learn, refine, practice and apply specific skills which incorporate: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, print and textiles. Drawing and painting skills underpin each and every unit. These skills are then applied to produce a `final piece`, whether this be individually or as a group.

All children will be able to access the Art and Design curriculum by ensuring suitable scaffolding and support is in place to remove any barriers the children may have when accessing this subject. Enrichment opportunities are offered to all children who are mastering the knowledge and skills for their age range, additional opportunity and challenge is incorporated into the learning journey.

At the Orchard Lea Federation we aim to offer memorable, exciting, enriching art and design days where the children can learn additional skills and, most importantly, follow their creative flare! This may follow a theme, be related to a specific artist, be an idea raised by the school council or having an artist to visit.

Art - Progression of knowledge and skills

Orchard Lea Art

Year 2

Year 2 have been learning all about the artist Leonardo Da Vinci. They have used different effects, creating pattern and texture, by using a variety of pencils, lines and dots with shading.

Year 3

In the Spring term, Year 3 have been studying Vincent Van Gough; learning various facts about him but also about the impact and influence he has had on Art throughout the decades. They learned and rehearsed a variety of skills with paint brush techniques and used these to experiment making flowers. Look at these beautiful shapes.

Year 4

Year 4 have made some wonderful, natural sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. They have created and combined materials to create pattern and shape.

Year 5

Studying Matisse, the children in Year 5 worked really hard to create collages incorporating rough, smooth, plain and patterned pictures that explored visual and tactile qualities. They spent time creating their final piece in the Art room.
